Trump faces unprecedented legal peril, but will it hurt his standing with Republican voters?

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:15:57 GMT

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — In March, when Donald Trump became the first former president in U.S. history indicted on criminal charges, his reelection campaign saw a huge surge in donations. Even political rivals rushed to support him. There was no dent in his front-runner status after the state charges in New York.Thursday’s news that Trump has been indicted again, this time on federal charges related to his handling of classified documents, may offer a repeat.Trump faces seven criminal charges, including the willful retention of national defense information, obstruction of justice and conspiracy, though the scope of the evidence remained unclear because the indictment was under seal. But the day after Trump was indicted, there were clear signs that Republican voters may be willing to entrust him again with access to the nation’s biggest secrets and authority over the very laws prosecutors say he defied.Republican pollster Neil Newhouse said the indictment would not fundamentally...

Susan Louise Lorincz, 58, of Ocala returned to court in Marion County a day after she pleaded not guilty to a first-degree felony charge of manslaughter with a firearm, as well as counts of culpable negligence, battery and assault. As a condition of her bond, Circuit Court Judge Robert Hodges ordered Lorincz to wear an ankle monitor and to stay away from the family of her slain neighbor, 34-year-old Ajike Owens. The courtroom was packed with relatives and supporters of Owens, a mother of four children. One of the family’s attorneys, Anthony Thomas, told reporters after the Friday hearing that they would continue to push for Lorincz to face a more serious charge of second-degree murder. “We don’t believe that Susan had any sort of respect at all for human life,” Thomas said. “This wasn’t something where she was cle...

Texas watermelons less sweet this year, weather to blame

Editor’s Note: The video above shows KXAN News Today’s top headlines for June 9, 2023(KXAN) -- Shoppers buying Texas-grown watermelons may notice a dip in quality this year. According to Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service experts, frequent rainfall as the fruit grew on the vine led to lower brix measurements compared to recent years. Brix measures sugar in fruit. Despite that, it shouldn't be too difficult to find Texas-grown watermelons. The fruit is growing on more acres in South Texas. Last year, dry conditions meant fewer watermelons available, but they had very high brix scores. The rains this year also meant some growers are dealing with disease like downy mold and a fungus called fusarium. Those things can also lower the quality of the fruit.“Yields are better than last year, but quality is down, and I think if you asked growers, they’d say it’s average across the board,” Juan Anciso, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension horticulturist said. “Harvest is wrapping up in the [Rio Gra...
