By Brian K. Sullivan | BloombergTropical Storm Hilary has spun up in the Pacific off Mexico’s coast and could pummel Southern California early next week.Hilary is moving west-northwest about 470 miles from Manzanillo, Mexico, with top winds of 40 miles per hour, the US National Hurricane Center said in an 8 a.m. advisory. The five-day track for the storm potentially carries it into Southern California as a post-tropical system by Monday, although forecasts that far out may be inaccurate.Courtesy of AccuWeather “Hilary has the potential to bring impacts to the Baja California peninsula and portions of the southwestern United States this weekend,” according to an analysis by Samantha Camposano and Lisa Bucci, forecasters at the center. “Although it is too soon to determine the location and magnitude of rainfall and wind impacts, interests in these areas should monitor the progress of Hilary.”Also see: $83 million project prepares OC flood control channel for 100-year stormTropica...California man convicted of killing girlfriend whose body was found in trash bin

A La Habra man who strangled his girlfriend and left her body in an Anaheim trash bin before his arrest while trying to leave the country was convicted Tuesday of murder for the 2018 slaying. An Orange County Superior Court jury deliberated for about an hour and a half before finding Amer Alhasan, now 33, guilty of first-degree murder for the Oct. 30, 2018 killing of 38-year-old Tiyanie Ly.Ly’s body was discovered shoved in a duffel bag left in a trash container behind an apartment complex in the 2100 block of Balboa Plaza. Detectives quickly determined that Alhasan was the last person to see her alive and arrested him before he could board a flight out of the country at Los Angeles International Airport.Deputy District Attorney Janine Madera told jurors that Alhasan killed Ly because she refused to get an abortion after the couple wrongly determined that she was pregnant with twin boys. The World Health Organization on Thursday called for countries to integrate traditional and complementary medicine into their national health systems, despite significant criticism over its support of practices that some experts see as pseudoscience. “Traditional medicine has made enormous contributions to human health, and has enormous potential,” said WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at the WHO Traditional Medicine Global Summit today in India. The head of the U.N. health body said that traditional medicine was “not a thing of the past,” adding that there was growing demand for it and it was important for preventing and treating non-communicable diseases. “We urge all countries to commit to examining how best to integrate traditional and complementary medicine into their national health systems,” he said. Complementary and alternative medicines are not routinely reimbursed by health insurers, with a 2020 study finding that in Europe, countries such as Sweden, ...Latest news
