Dev Shah wins National Spelling Bee, going out on top after up-and-down spelling career

OXON HILL, Md. (AP) — Soft-spoken but brimming with confidence, Dev Shah asked precise questions about obscure Greek roots, rushed through his second-to-last word and rolled to the Scripps National Spelling Bee title Thursday night.Dev, a 14-year-old from Largo, Florida, had his spelling career interrupted by the pandemic, then didn’t make it out of his regional bee last year. He got through his highly competitive regional this year for a third and final try at the national title, and he ended up holding the trophy over his head as confetti fell. His winning word was “psammophile,” a layup for a speller of his caliber.“Psammo meaning sand, Greek?” he asked. “Phile, meaning love, Greek?”He soaked up the moment by asking for the word to be used in a sentence, something he described a day earlier as a stalling tactic. Then he put his hands over his face as he was declared the winner.Charlotte Walsh, a 14-year-old from Arlington, Virginia, was the runner-up, and she gave Dev a cong...

Drought, water overuse prompt Arizona to limit construction in some fast-growing parts of Phoenix

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 15:08:12 GMT

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona will not approve new housing construction on the fast-growing edges of metro Phoenix that rely on groundwater thanks to years of overuse and a multi-decade drought that is sapping its water supply. In a news conference Thursday, Gov. Katie Hobbs announced the restrictions that could affect some of the fastest-growing areas of the nation’s fifth-largest city. Officials said developers could still build in the affected areas but would need to find alternative water sources to do so — such as surface or recycled water.Driving the state’s decision was a projection that showed that over the next 100 years, demand in metro Phoenix for almost 4.9 million acre-feet of groundwater would be unmet without further action, Hobbs said. An acre-foot of water is roughly enough for two to three U.S. households per year.Despite the move, the governor said the state isn’t running out of water. “Nobody who has water is going to lose their water,” Hobbs said.Officials ...

TOKYO (AP) — Japan’s National Police Agency said in a report Thursday that flaws in basic security such as an absence of metal detectors and bag checks allowed an attacker to enter a campaign crowd unnoticed and throw a pipe bomb at Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in April. The bomb fell near Kishida and he was pushed away by special police before it exploded and he was unhurt.A suspect, Ryuji Kimura, 24, was arrested at the scene of the April 15 attack in the fishing port of Saikazaki in the western prefecture of Wakayama, where Kishida was about to make a campaign speech for a local candidate. Kimura remains in police custody and is undergoing a court-approved mental evaluation until Sept. 1.Some of the people attending the campaign rally, who were mostly from the fishing community, said they were surprised by the loose security arrangements, such as the lack of bag checks and the close distance between them and the prime minister. If Thursday night at Target Field was any indication, the four-game series between the Twins and AL Central rival Cleveland is going to be a wild one. Both teams battled back from multi-run deficits before a sacrifice fly by Willi Castro in the bottom of the ninth gave the Twins a 7-6 before an announced crowd of 16,788.Christian Vazquez led off the ninth with a walk. Like Nikola Jokic, Paige Pecoraro posted up on the low block and went reaching for a steal.“$900,” she grumbled, grimacing as her smart phone refreshed. “I’m waiting for tickets to go under $900.”Hour to game time. Game 1. Nuggets-Heat. First-ever NBA Finals in Denver.Nothing under $900.“I think it’ll be well worth it,” she reasoned as we spoke a block from Ball Arena. “We haven’t been to the Finals, ever.”Pecoraro’s an ICU nurse in Littleton. She’s Nuggets to the core, born and bred. Paige even called in (cough) sick (cough) for Thursday night.“I told them weeks ahead of time, ‘I will NOT work this night,’” she recalled. “I WILL be at this game.’”To make it happen, she worked five shifts last week. Five 12-hour slogs, almost 80 hours in total. Just to be here. Just to fork over almost a week’s salary in one gulp.“I don’t have a ticket right now. My parents just went in. They’re at like club level,” she sighed, refreshing the phone again.“And they’re flying to Miami for (Games 3 and...
