SYDNEY (AP) — Colombia won its opening match of the Women’s World Cup 2-0 over South Korea as Las Cafeteras head coach Nelson Abadía served the first of a two-game suspension. Colombia’s manager since 2017, Abadía received a red card at the end of the 2022 Copa América Femenina final for arguing with a match official. A spokesman for CONMEBOL, the governing body for South America’s international tournaments, did not provide any other details about the incident. The red card was equivalent to a two-game suspension, which meant Colombia’s first two games in Group H at the global tournament. Abadía will also miss the game against Group H favorite Germany on Sunday.“He’s kind of like the dad of the team,” Colombian midfielder Elexa Bahr said. “But I don’t think it affected us at all. We all came to win the first game and that’s what we did.”Angelo Marsiglia is filling in for Abadía. “He was always there to provide us with the best conditions,” Colombian forward Linda Caicedo...

Brisbane, Australia (AP) — Having the Women’s World Cup on home soil has given Australia’s team the confidence it can contend for the title even without star striker Sam Kerr on the field. The Chelsea forward and Australian captain missed the Matildas’ opening game last week because of a calf muscle injury that will also keep her sidelined for Thursday’s Group B game against Nigeria. And perhaps longer than that. The Matildas are pitching it as a chance to show the depth of their squad.“I think we could play any one of us right now in the starting 11 and it would be the same as what we do on the training pitch,” midfielder Tameka Yallop said from Australia’s team camp in Brisbane. “So I think everyone has that ability and capability to step up and be a star at any point.”Steph Catley, wearing the captain’s armband in place of Kerr, converted a penalty kick for co-host Australia’s 1-0 opening win over Ireland. Despite the win, the Matildas’ offense struggl...

FedEx pilots reject 30% pay hike proposal, but a strike isn’t imminent

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 17:10:00 GMT

New York (CNN) — Pilots for FedEx have rejected a tentative labor deal. But that doesn’t mean they’re about to walk off the job just as UPS is threatened with its own strike by 340,000 drivers and other hourly ground workers. The FedEx pilots who belong to the Air Line Pilots Association voted 57% against the proposed contract, which was reached in May and endorsed by union leadership. The proposed contract would have provided for a 30% pay increase, as well as a 30% improvement in pension benefit. Major objections from the rank-and-file are not yet clear. But even with the “no” vote, the 5,200 FedEx pilots won’t be able to go on strike any time soon. They work under a different labor law than most private sector employees, who are allowed to go on strike when their contracts expire, as is the case with the Teamsters at UPS, who could be on strike as soon as August 1.FedEx pilots are covered by the Railway Labor Act, which despite the name, covers both rail workers and airline employe...

KYIV — Russian forces occupying Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant have placed explosive mines near the facility, warned the chief of the U.N.’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).The mines were located in a buffer zone between the plant’s internal and external barriers and were facing away from the facility; they were spotted during a Sunday walk-around by IAEA inspectors.“Having such explosives on the site is inconsistent with the IAEA safety standards and nuclear security guidance and creates additional psychological pressure on plant staff,” the agency’s Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said in a statement issued Monday. This is the second month in a row that the U.N. atomic watchdog has reported the presence of explosives both outside and inside the perimeter of the nuclear plant, which Russian security personnel on site explained were for defensive purposes.Grossi’s warning comes as authorities in Kyiv are also rais...
