The future for Europe and the role of medical innovation

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 06:40:46 GMT

Imagine a future where our children and grandchildren in Europe do not fear diabetes, cancer or Alzheimer’s disease. Where these diseases can be treated in a way that means people living with them experience life like others — or where the diseases are prevented in the first place. This might seem like a dreamer’s world. But when you think of the achievements in medicine that we take for granted on a daily basis — vaccinations that prevent deadly childhood illnesses, and medicines that reduce the risk of a heart attack for millions of people — perhaps the dream isn’t so far off.The company I lead, Novo Nordisk, founded 100 years ago, was the manufacturer of the first generation of insulin in Europe, giving people who were uncertain whether they might live beyond the next few months hope about their futures. But the innovation did not stop there. Innovation through generations means that today, people living with type 1 diabetes don’t need to limit their dreams. We are proud to be spo...

DENVER (AP) — Four men were found dead Tuesday inside a home just north of Denver, authorities said. Deputies responded to a call about a gunshot victim at a home in the afternoon and found the four men dead inside, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office said via the social media platform X. The agency said it appeared to be an “isolated incident” and there was no ongoing threat to the public. The house was locked so deputies forced their way inside and found one man dead from a gunshot wound, Sgt. Adam Sherman told the Denver Post. Deputies found the other three deceased men while checking the rest of the house, Sherman said. Initial indicators show three of the four men were family members, Sherman said. The person who called 911 was a family member of one of the victims, he said. The discovery was made a day after three people were fatally shot in a rural area southwest of Denver, allegedly over a property dispute between neighbors. CHICAGO — President Joe Biden's recent executive order on artificial intelligence aims to maximize AI's benefits while also addressing risks.AI can have some great perks, like early illness detection. But it's not all good and there are some serious concerns about privacy, bias and job displacement that come with it.Artificial intelligence is a machine that can perform human tasks autonomously when trained on data.Data are the ingredients or puzzle pieces to describe and teach AI programs how to understand the human world. Algorithms are like formulas that provide the recipe to guide computer programs in processing and making sense of data, enabling them to perform a task.Cybersecurity expert Roman Eng is working on his Ph.D in Explainable AI."Now you can actually have the chatbot see, it can hear you and it can actually talk," Eng said. You've probably heard of Open AI's Chat GPT. Similar to a search engine, a chatbot allows you to type a prompt. Once the prompt is entered, the cha...
